Kid's Tennis

Jefferson County has new opportunities for kids to get out on the courts and play tennis.

High School Volunteers needed for kid's tennis program!

High School volunteers are needed to help with the Fall and Spring YMCA after-school tennis programs. You can earn community service credit too! You don't have to know how to play, just a willingness to help younger kids learn the game. JCCTA will offer a free tennis lesson to high school volunteers and help with training! Contact Bill Kush at the YMCA, 385-5811 for more information.

USTA Jr. Team Tennis League of the Olympic Peninsula

USTA Jr. Team Tennis League of the Olympic Peninsula is entering its second season, with lessons and teams for kids ages 6-18. Registration will begin May 20. For more information about league play, email us at: admin@jeffersoncountytennis.com

Sequim sent an 18 & under team to the USTA Jr. Team Tennis area playoffs in Bremerton, placing second and qualified to go to the section playoff in Tacoma in August.

YMCA After-School Tennis starts in September

The YMCA After-School Tennis program will start the first week of September, and will have a special event at the end. A team will have the opportunity to attend the USTA Tennis Fest in Portland in October. Make sure you register the first day of school or at the YMCA office at the Rec Center.

2008 Rhody Jr. Rallyball Tournament

The 2007 tournament was really fun, and if you want to play next spring, now is the time to start practicing! You can learn to play all winter through the county rec and YMCA programs which both use gyms for indoor tennis.

Try your hand at designing a t-shirt logo for the 2008 Rhody Jr. Rallyball Tournament. Entries must be emailed, and designed to be printed in 1-2 colors. Deadline for entries will be in March 2008.

Quickstart, is the USTA’s new tennis format designed to get kids aged 10& under into the gamet, using rackets, ball, net height, and court sizes scaled to the size and age of the younger player.  Quickstart instruction will be used in many Jefferson County youth programs.  For more information about Quickstart, please visit www.quickstarttennis.com and http://partners.quickstarttennis.com/

USA Jr. Olympics Skills Competition -
USTA Rapid Rally Tennis event, Sunday May 4

A free USA Jr. Olympics Skill Competition Rapid Rally qualifying event will be held at Mountain View Elementary School tennis courts on Sunday May 4 for boys and girls ages 8-13.  Sponsored by JCCTA, this event will have a limited number of participants due to scheduling constraints.  Open to Jefferson County residents.

The Jr. Olympic Skills Competition is a FREE national grassroots skills competition that provides both, boys and girls ages 8 to 13, the opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities in four (4) sports - basketball, soccer, tennis and track & field. Jr. Olympic Skills Competition encourages youth participation in sport and emphasizes fair and friendly competition. Youngsters can participate in any or all of the individual sports and advance through three (3) levels of competition, including Local, Regional and the National Finals. Each sport is scored individually and the boys and girls compete separately.

Here is your chance to meet Olympians at the National Finals of the USTA Rapid Rally Tennis portion of the U.S. Jr. Olympic Skills Competition. Start your journey by participating in a local qualifying event, advance to Regional Competitions and then possibly the National Finals in mid August. This basic tennis skills event lets you compete against yourself and the clock to hit a low compression tennis ball against a wall (above the Net Line) and stand behind the Rally Line (15 feet from wall) as many times as possible in 30 seconds.

Here is how it works: The volunteers measure out the competition area and adhere the Serve Target and the Rally and Net Lines as described in the Administrative Handbook (click HERE for Handbook). When you are ready, you start with an over-head lob serve and try to hit the Serve Target for three (3) additional points. Once you hit your serve, this begins the clock as you continue to Rally the ball against the wall and above the Net Line. Remember, in order for a hit to count, you have to hit the ball from behind the Rally Line and the ball must hit the wall above the Net Line. Continue to Rally until the 30 second time has expired. After completed, the volunteer tallies the number of good Rallies and provides you with a final score. Ask your parents to help you practice for your local Jr. Olympic Skills event. Good

2nd Annual Rhody Jr. Ralleyball Tournament, Saturday May 10

Teams of up to 6 players will compete in a round robin tournament, in an event that encourages long rallies!  The event will be held at the Port Townsend Rec Center if it rains. Open to Jefferson County residents. The 73rd Annual Rhododendron Festival Junior Royalty will present awards.

JCCTA would like to offer coordinating the USTA Jr. Team Tennis League of the Olympic Peninsula again in June.  We need parent coordinators to help.  Coaches are available to help teach.

Jefferson County Parks and Recreation will offer an adult new beginning and returning to tennis two week lesson program in mid-July.
